Sustainability

Our pristine coastal waters provide an abundance of nutrients for our shellfish year round and we take great pride in ensuring the highest quality product is produced through our long history of sustainable farming practices.

Over the last seven years, Pentlatch Seafoods has been working hand-in-hand with Environment Canada (EC), the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and the Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO) to develop an intensive environmental stewardship program which has resulted in dramatic improvements in the water quality of our traditional territorial waters. In 2008, Pentlatch was recognized with a Mid-Island Science and Technology Innovation Council award for aquaculture business of the year for their environmental stewardship program.

The mandate of this program, Clean Water – Our Responsibility, Our Legacy, enables us to ensure the future susatinability of the resources and our legacy for future generations.

Throughout the short history of Pentlatch Seafoods, the company has taken a leadership role in developing industry protocols for the natural relay of shellfish species, and have completed significant DNA based scientific studies which resulted the opening of new areas for shellfish culture and optimizing the management of water quality issues. Pentlatch Seafoods conducts its own bi-weekly water monitoring program in all its growing areas.

The company’s considerable efforts in the areas of public awareness and education in the area of water quality has also been noticed by other agencies and has earning the company an Environmental Award from the City of Comox in 2006 and, in 2007, Pentlatch was chosen “Business of the Year” by the BC Shellfish Growers Association, the leading provincial industry body.

Our products go through rigorous testing before going to market and adhere to federal HAACP protocols, the CFIA’s  Food Safety Enhancement Program (FSEP) and the Canadian Shellfish Sanitation Program (CSSP).

Pentlatch Seafoods Ltd. (PSL) continues to actively culture Manila Clams and Pacific Oysters on our own beaches and to ensure the future sustainability of these resources we plant millions of clam and oyster seed on an annual basis.

We are continually upgrading sustainable farming opportunities through ongoing developments in wild shellfish harvest activities and shellfish aquaculture programs to produce 100% natural shellfish from the waters of our traditional territories.
